Tips & Tricks
for
Practicing
1. When doing chest movements such as lifts,
camels, circles, etc, it can be difficult to separate your breathing from the movement. When practicing alone do your chest
movements to music you know the words to and sing along, loudly! Your body already knows how to breathe and produce sound
without thinking, so concentrate on the movements only and the breath will follow naturally. If you aren't alone
when practicing, carry on a conversation to keep your breath occupied.
2. Firstly take all the moves you know and
place them on flash cards (I cut mine to smaller size and in many cases include two variations of that move per card)
once you have listed all the moves on cards place them in a bucket, bowl, bag, or what have you. Pull four cards for each practice time. Those four cards
represent the movements to be worked on in your desired time. Practice these moves individually in drill style, then move
into combining and layering the moves. Then move into combining them all into one (if able). This type of practice gives
the dancer focus for that set practice time which allows variation in practicing moves for it is the luck of the draw
and puts together various movements.
Remember... update your moves container as you learn new moves!
